Lewis and Clark Combo Pack A Four book history of one of America's greatest adventure stories. In book One: Thomas Jefferson has tried and failed to send an American Expedition to the Pacific. Geography and politics have worked against him. Now he is president and success is within his grasp. He knows that the future of the young United States might well depend on controlling the unknown expanse of land that lay beyond the Mississippi. This task is given to Meriwether Lewis; who asks his former Army commander, William Clark to join him. Together they prepare to face the challenges of the greatest adventure into the unknown since Columbus set out for India. In Book Two: It is the Fall of 1804. Lewis and Clark meet the Sioux, Arikara and the Mandan Indians. The expedition has halted for the winter in North Dakota and made a freezing winter camp. Here they meet a French trader and his teenage Shoshone wife, Sacajawea. In the Spring, they hurry up the Missouri, hoping to reach the Pacific and return in a single year. By June, they are still East of the Rockies and trying to guess which forks of the Missouri will lead them over those forbidding Peaks. In Book Three: We see the expedition through the eyes of Sacajawea. Sacajawea was born a Shoshone in the rocky mountains. As a girl she was captured by the Minnetarees and taken to live on the plains of the Upper Missouri. Still a teenager, she joins the Lewis and Clark Expedition and travels with them to the Pacific and back. Her story is a fascinating tale of Western exploration and the intersection of cultures.
In Book
Four: Like most slaves, York never wrote a word. Almost everything we
know about him was written by his slave master, William Clark. This lack of
documentary evidence is particularly unfortunate since York's experience is
one of the most unique in American history.Because York was not able to record his own thoughts and feelings, the author has relied on accounts of other slaves to create an accurate picture of what his life might have been like before and after the Lewis and Clark expedition. This book will provide interesting and valuable insights into our history and of the contributions of men like York. Relive an important part of the making of our wonderful country.
