Sacajawea's story is a fascinating tale of western exploration and the intersection of
cultures.
Sacajawea was an oddity among the members of the Lewis and Clark
expedition. She was the only woman, the only full-blooded Indian, and along
with her husband was only one of two non-English speakers.
Sacajawea was born a Shoshone in the rocky mountains. As a girl she was
captured by the Minnetarees and taken to live on the plains of the Upper
Missouri. Still a teenager, she joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition
and traveled to the Pacific and back.
Upon her return, she accepted Clark's invitation and moved to St. Louis. She
was the product of many cultures yet she was truly a member of none. Two
centuries later, Sacajawea has become an icon representing the strength of
women and the contributions of Native Americans.
Except for Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea was the most widely traveled North American of
her time.
