The people of Maya made a chocolate flavored beverage out of cacao, which grew in rain forests, which they transplanted and grew in their own yards. They did this by harvesting the cacao seeds, fermented and cooked them, and then ground the seeds into a paste. Once mixed with ingredients which included chile peppers and cornmeal they had a spicy chocolate drink. Eventually the Aztecs traded with Maya for Cacao. It was so valuable to the Aztecs that they often required payment in cacao seeds by the people they conquered. Chocolate soon became a drink which in Aztec society was reserved for royalty.
