Cream cheese was invented in 1872, by William Lawrence, an American Dairyman living in New York. It was an accident! He was actually trying to reproduce a French cheese.

Cream cheese was originally marketed under the name PHILADELPHIA Brand Cream Cheese, which is now a famous trademark owned by Kraft foods. His company the Empire Cheese Company of South Edmeston, New York, manufactured the cream cheese.
