Memorial Day is celebrated, every year, on the last Monday in May. It honors the men and women who died, in all American wars, while serving our country as members of the American military. It was originally called Decoration Day, and originated in the years following the Civil War. Memorial Day became an official American federal holiday in 1971. Americans observe or celebrate Memorial Day in various ways: visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in Memorial Day parades.
In 1966, the president of the United States, Lyndon Johnson, declared
Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo was chosen
because they had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event.
Businesses closed and residents showed respect for our war dead by
decorating the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.
Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday, in 1971, to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans day, celebrated on November 11th, honors all veterans, both living and dead.)
