The True Story of Smokey Bear  "Hot Foot Teddy"

In the Spring of 1950, a fire raged out of control in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. It was spotted by an operator manning one of the fire towers located North of the Capitan Mountains who reported it to the nearest ranger station.               Order Hot Foot Teddy.

The first crew arriving discovered a major fire which was being swept along the ground and driven by strong winds. As word of the fire spread, more and more crews reported to help. Forest Rangers, army soldiers, men from the New Mexico State Game Department, and civilian volunteers worked together to fight this dangerous forest fire.

During this time a little bear was seen wandering alone near the fire line. The firefighters left him alone hoping his mother would find him.

This book chronicles the life of the little bear, called Smokey, and the program inspired by him. It contains posters and images provided by the National Forest Service and appendices with information on the Smokey Bear program.

It is a children's storybook,  a teaching aid for adults and children, and is a licensed product of the US Forest Service.
