Joel closed his eyes and thought
about last year's birthday party. There were balloons, games, presents and lots
of cake and ice cream last year. He had so much fun! Suddenly,
Joel heard someone. He opened
his eyes quickly, but it was only the mail carrier.
"Hello," the carrier said cheerfully. "Here's your mail." Joel took the mail and remembered to say, "Thank you." |

It is one of the most
important days of the year a very special day for Joel Johnstone. "It's my
birthday!" Joel said happily to his friend Ron who had come to his house to
play.
"Today is my birthday. Today is my birthday," he sang again and again.
Joel was so excited! He and
Ron danced around the room laughing and
singing about all the birthday fun to come, such as games, gifts, cake, and
balloons!
Suddenly,
Joel stopped
dancing and looked at Ron with a big smile. "I can't wait any more!"
Joel
cried. "Let's go find my birthday party!"
Joel and Ron raced to the kitchen. "Bet mom will jump up and yell
'Surprise!' when we get to the kitchen." Joel
yelled as they ran.
Ron grinned and nodded,
but when they burst into the kitchen it was empty! Joel
turned to Ron and
whispered, "Where is everybody?"
With a shoulder shrug, Ron watched as
Joel looked around the room with a
frown on his face. Suddenly, Joel turned to
Ron with a big grin. "Let's look
for my birthday cake," he giggled. "There must be a birthday cake here
somewhere!"
Ron opened the first cabinet and peeked inside. With a sigh and a head
shake, Ron closed the cabinet and said "Nothing here."
Joel flew around the
kitchen opening the other cabinets. He found many interesting things, but no
birthday cake.
Ron and Joel stared at each other blankly. Then,
Ron pointed to the
refrigerator. Joel laughed and together they pulled the heavy door open. They
looked on all the shelves but there was no birthday cake. Joel
sighed as they
shut the refrigerator door.
"The pantry!" Joel cried with a giggle. They ran to the pantry to search.
They found crackers, bread, soup and other food, but no birthday cake.
Ron found two cupcakes and asked, "Are these for your birthday?"
"No," cried
Joel.
"There has to be a great big cake because there are always lots of people at my
birthday party."
Joel felt very unhappy and disappointed.
Ron followed him into the living
room.
Mom?" he shouted. "Where is everybody?"
They listened for a moment but no one answered.
"Has everyone forgotten
my birthday?" Joel wondered.
"Let's look outside," Joel said.
Ron nodded and they ran through the
house. Opening the door, they began to search for party guests, presents,
balloons or anything that might be part of a birthday party. They looked and
looked.
Joel and Ron found nothing outside but the neighbor's cat. They sat on the
front porch with long faces. The cat rubbed against their legs and they reached
down to pet it.
Joel scratched the
cat's ears and asked sadly, "Did you know it is my birthday?"
The cat meowed as if to say, "Who's birthday?" and then wandered away.
Joel sighed heavily as the cat trotted off down the sidewalk.
"This is the worst
birthday of my life," he thought.
Joel closed his eyes and thought about last year's birthday party. There
were balloons, games, presents and lots of cake and ice cream last year. He had
so much fun! Suddenly, Joel heard someone. He opened his eyes quickly, but it
was only the mail carrier.
"Hello," the carrier said cheerfully. "Here's your mail."
Joel took the mail and
remembered to say, "Thank you."
"Are there any birthday cards?" Ron asked excitedly.
"Birthday cards!" Joel shouted. He had forgotten about birthday cards. Joel hunted through the mail for anything addressed to Joel Johnstone. He found one envelope with his name and address.
"Could this be a
birthday card?" he wondered.
Joel tore the envelope open and stared at the note inside. "This isn't a
birthday card," he cried. "It's just a note that says 'Come to the kitchen.' "
"But why?" Ron asked. "The kitchen's empty. No presents or cake or people or anything!"
"I know," said Joel with a puzzled frown.
"What a mystery!" Joel said. "Who sent this note? Why do they want me in the kitchen? Where's my birthday party?"
"Maybe it's not about your birthday party," Ron suggested. "Maybe it is a special mystery for you to solve."
Joel thought and
thought. "Well, I guess there's only one way to find out. Let's go to the
kitchen."
Joel and Ron ran back through the house to the kitchen.
Joel stopped Ron
at the kitchen door, and they both listened carefully. They couldn't hear a
sound. They took a deep breath and went into the kitchen.
"SURPRISE!" everyone yelled. "Happy Birthday!" they shouted. The kitchen
was full of people mom, friends, relatives and even the neighbor's cat.
Joel
couldn't believe his eyes. There were birthday cards, birthday presents,
colorful balloons, and right in the middle of the table was the biggest birthday
cake he had ever seen.
Ron and Joel grinned at each other. They had found his birthday party at
last! Joel Johnstone was so happy he shouted, "What a great birthday surprise!"
