Where In the Zoo Are You? (Complete Story)

What a great day to come to the zoo! That thought and feeling repeated many times in the mind of Wendy Heagan.

What a great day to come from her home in Chicago to go to the zoo! And, what a great day to be with Mom and Dad at the zoo!

As she came through the zoo's entrance with Mom and Dad, Wendy heard a duck quacking loudly in the distance.

Barely able to catch a glimpse of the duck, Wendy tried to push her way through the crowd of people to get closer to the noisy bird.

Finally, Wendy made her way to the duck. But, in her excitement, she had lost sight of Mom and Dad, who had now disappeared in the crowd. Which way to go?

A bit afraid, Wendy looked at the mass of people and shouted "Mom and Dad, where in the zoo are you?" But, her words were not heard ... except by the duck.

Wendy was about to cry, but the duck said, "Come with me. My friend, the ostrich, might help you."

So following the duck, Wendy soon saw the ostrich. It's head was actually hidden, buried in the ground.

"Hey! ... Hey, you - ostrich!" quacked the duck. As the ostrich's head appeared from the hole in the ground, the duck continued, "Have you seen anyone looking for Wendy?"

"Now, really ... how could I have seen anything with my head buried in the ground?" replied the ostrich. "Why don't you try the bear?" she continued.

Following the advice of the ostrich, the duck and Wendy searched for the bear.

When they arrived at the bear's den, the duck shouted, "Hey! ... Hey, you - bear!"

As the bear raised his head, the duck continued, "Have you seen or heard anyone looking for Wendy? The ostrich could not help us, and we thought that maybe you could."

"Silly duck!" scolded the bear. "I was asleep until you awakened me. Try the elephant. He's always awake."

So, after listening to the words of the bear, Wendy followed the duck to the elephant's home. Maybe he could help Wendy find Mom and Dad.

Suddenly, above the trees, it looked as if there was a fountain, shooting water up into the air. But, in between each spurt of water, there was a long, trumpet-like noise.

Moving on, Wendy and the duck could see that the elephant was using his trunk like a shower. The duck shouted, "Hey! Hey, you - elephant! The ostrich and the bear could not help us. Maybe you can. Have you seen or heard anyone looking for my friend, Wendy?"

"It's my bath-time, duck!" said the elephant. "I've not seen or heard any such thing. The giraffe might help you. He's tall, always looking over everything."

Sadly, Wendy turned to the duck and said, "Will I ever find Mom and Dad? The ostrich, the bear, and the elephant can't help."

Calmly the duck said, "Wendy, don't worry. Someone is sure to help." Wendy and the duck continued walking.

Long before they arrived at the place where the giraffe lived, they saw him nibbling leaves from the trees. He was so tall!

When they finally arrived, the duck shouted upward, "Hey! Hey, you - giraffe!" As the giraffe looked down on them, the duck shouted, "Have you seen anyone looking for Wendy? The ostrich, the bear and the elephant could not help us. Can you?"

"No, I can't, duck," said the giraffe. "This is, as you can see, my snack-time. Ask the monkey down the lane. He's always swinging in the trees and chattering to people."

"No luck with the ostrich, the bear, the elephant or the giraffe! Can anyone help? Where in the zoo are you, Mom and Dad?" Wendy thought.

Following the duck again, she soon saw the monkey juggling oranges. The duck said to the monkey, "Hey! ... Hey, you - monkey! The ostrich, bear, elephant and giraffe couldn't help us. Have you seen or heard of anyone looking for Wendy here?"

"This is my play-time, duck! No, I can't help you," answered the monkey. "Why don't you ask the lion and the tiger?" And the monkey continued juggling.

Wendy was very discouraged now. No one had helped ... not the ostrich ... not the bear ... not the elephant ... not the giraffe ... not the monkey ... NO ONE!

As they moved on and came closer to the lion and tiger, Wendy and the duck felt the ground shake from the roars of those giant cats. First the lion ... then the tiger ... back and forth.

Shouting loud as he could, the duck got the attention of the two huge cats: "Hey you! .. Hey, lion and tiger ... Have you seen anyone looking for Wendy?" asked the duck. "The ostrich, bear, elephant, giraffe and monkey couldn't help us, but certainly you two can ... can't you?"

"Silly duck!" replied the lion. "The tiger and I are arguing over who can roar loudest. We haven't seen or heard anything." With that, they continued roaring.

No one ... not the ostrich ... not the bear ... not the elephant ... not the giraffe ... not the monkey ... not the lion or the tiger ... no one could help Wendy. As the duck and Wendy stood there with heads hung low, they heard a strange sound above.

As they looked up, they saw a beautiful parrot who was squawking ... What? ... Huh? ... was squawking, "Wake up, Wendy! Wake up!"

It was the voice of Mom at her bedroom door: "Come on! It's time to wake up. We have to get ready to go to the zoo."

Wendy rubbed her sleepy eyes, and smiled as she looked at her own stuffed animal zoo on the dresser.

"Wow! This is going to be a great day!" Wendy thought ... "TWO trips to the zoo in the same day! ... I think I'll be careful not to get lost on THIS one!"
