As they walked, Emmy
selected songs to sing. It didn't take them long to pick the perfect place
for their picnic.
Soon they had spread out their fabulous feast of food. Raggedy Andy and
Raggedy Dog said, "Hey, guys, let's play first!"
"That's a great idea,"
Emmy and Raggedy
Ann replied at the same time.
They found a nice open area to fly their kites and play ball. Grouchy
Bear kept muttering, "Your kite's too near that tree," and "Your ball
rolled too close to me."
Finally, Emmy convinced Grouchy Bear to
join the fun by playing a game of hide-and-seek with everyone.

July 2006Emily Jones
just loves to play with all her Raggedy
friends. Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy are her
two favorites. However, the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees,
Raggedy Dog, Raggedy Cat, Sunny Bunny and even lovable, old Grouchy Bear are
also very special to Jenny. Sarah and Sammy
like to join Jenny on
her many adventures with Raggedy Ann and Andy in
Yale, Michigan. Tomorrow they will all go on a picnic. They are
looking forward to another exciting experience. At
bedtime, Jenny took a bath and brushed her teeth. She
hugged all her Raggedy friends goodnight and
tucked Raggedy Ann and Andy into bed with her.
"What
story would you like me to read to you?" Jenny
asked. "How about this one?" Raggedy Ann and Andy just smiled. After
reading the book, Jenny talked to them about the
picnic. She was excited that
Sarah and Sammy would be going with them.
Jenny was so sleepy that
she could barely keep
her eyes open.Jenny
awoke as she felt someone gently shaking
her. "Wake up, Jenny," whispered Raggedy
Ann. "It's almost time to leave for our picnic!" "Can't
anyone get any sleep around here?" complained Grouchy Bear. "Sounds
like someone got up on the wrong side of the bed," purred Raggedy Cat. "Oh, come
on everybody. Let's get going!" said an eager Raggedy Andy. "Raggedy
Andy is right," laughed Jenny. "I can't wait to
go on our picnic adventure." Jenny
quickly dressed. After breakfast, Raggedy Ann and Andy helped fill the picnic
basket. They packed peanut butter, jelly and bread for sandwiches. "I have
the apples, grapes and carrots," said Sunny Bunny. "Don't forget the honey
and cookies," mumbled Grouchy Bear. The Camel
with the Wrinkled Knees grinned, "Let's take plenty of lemonade,
Jenny. I know we'll get thirsty." Raggedy
Dog and Raggedy Cat added the plates, cups and napkins.
Jenny put a blanket on top and closed the lid of
the basket. Raggedy
Andy gathered some balls and a kite while Raggedy Ann and
Jenny chose their favorite books to read. As
they headed out the door, Grouchy Bear grumbled, "Who's going to carry this?"
Jenny
smiled and hugged him, "Why, Grouchy Bear, thanks so much for reminding me. I
almost forgot our basket." "It
certainly wouldn't be much of a picnic without the food,
Jenny," huffed Raggedy Cat. "Time to
go!" exclaimed Raggedy Andy. "Oh,
goody! I was hoping someone would say that soon," Sunny Bunny giggled. As they
walked, Jenny selected songs to sing. It didn't
take them long to pick the perfect place for their picnic. Soon they
had spread out their fabulous feast of food. Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Dog said,
"Hey, guys, let's play first!" "That's a
great idea," Jenny and Raggedy Ann replied at
the same time. They found
a nice open area to fly their kites and play ball. Grouchy Bear kept muttering,
"Your kite's too near that tree," and "Your ball rolled too close to me." Finally,
Jenny convinced Grouchy Bear to join the fun by
playing a game of hide-and-seek with everyone. Jenny
was the last one to be found. "I'm hungry! I think it's time to eat," said
Raggedy Andy. "Oh,
goody! I was hoping someone would say that soon," Sunny Bunny giggled. On the way
back to their picnic site, Jenny led them in a
goofy game of follow-the-leader. The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees suggested,
"Let's sing as we follow Jenny." Grouchy
Bear sulked, "Do we have to sing again?" As they
gathered around the blanket, Raggedy Ann said in a shocked voice, "Oh, no! All
our grapes are gone!" Everyone
stared in surprise. "Who took them?" growled Raggedy Dog. "I knew it
was a crummy day for a picnic," moaned Grouchy Bear. Jenny
said, "I didn't see anyone." The Camel
said, "That's right. We should have seen someone." Raggedy
Ann said, "I have an idea. Let's spread out and see if we can find any clues."
Raggedy
Andy yelled, "Come on, Raggedy Dog, let's go find those rotten, old foodnappers!"
"You guys
can go without me," sighed Raggedy Cat, "I'm just too, too tired." Raggedy
Ann and Sunny Bunny cried out together, "That's not a good idea!" "Yes,"
agreed Jenny, "what if the foodnappers come
back?" Grouchy
Bear grumbled, "I have a bad feeling about this." Jenny
gently took his hand and said, "Don't worry, Bear." Raggedy
Ann added, "We'll find our food and bring it back." "RRR. .
.Really?" questioned a doubtful Raggedy Cat. "Of
course," said Raggedy Andy as he and Raggedy Dog started off. They all headed
out in different directions. "Hey,
don't forget me, guys!" shouted The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees. He went
running after the others and finally caught up with
Jenny.When their
search turned up nothing, they went back to their blanket.
Jenny was the first to arrive and discovered the
bread was gone. Grouchy
Bear was the grouchiest he had ever been, "Well, isn't this just great! Now, I
have no bread to make my honey sandwiches!" Raggedy
Cat was huffy, "I knew I should have stayed." Raggedy
Andy said, "We've got to figure out who's taking our food. Then he asked,
"What's the plan, Raggedy Ann?" She whispered to Jenny.
Then
Jenny announced, "We'll hide behind the bushes
and trees and see who's taking our food." Sunny
Bunny smiled, "Won't those 'nappers be surprised?" The Camel
with the Wrinkled Knees asked Jenny, "What if
it's a lion or dinosaur or even a monster who's taking our food?" Jenny
patted his hump, "Don't worry, Camel. We're here with you." Raggedy
Andy also comforted him, "I'll protect you. I'm not afraid of anything. Come
on, Raggedy Dog!" Jenny
and the others quickly found good hiding places. They watched the blanket and
the rest of their food and waited patiently. The only
sounds they heard were the gentle rustling of the leaves and the chirping of the
birds. They were so tired from all their playing that soon everyone was asleep.
Jenny,
Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy awoke suddenly. The Camel, Raggedy Dog, Raggedy
Cat and Sunny Bunny also stirred. Jenny
whispered, "What's that noise? Is it really a lion?" They all laughed when
they realized it was just Grouchy Bear snoring. "What are
you guys laughing about?" Grouchy Bear sleepily grumbled. "Oh, no!"
shouted Jenny. "Look what's missing from our
blanket now." "I can't
believe it!" said Raggedy Ann. "What
could have happened to our cookies?" asked Raggedy Andy. "Did
anyone see or hear anything?" asked Jenny.
"What were
we supposed to hear over all that snoring?" sneered Raggedy Cat. "What
snoring?" mumbled a puzzled Grouchy Bear. "I don't
see any footprints, Jenny," said Raggedy
Andy. Raggedy
Dog bragged, "I know I can find the foodnappers! Just let me get a good sniff."
"Hold on,
Raggedy Dog," said Raggedy Ann. "We need another plan." Jenny
yelled, "Hey, guys, come over here! There are two red feathers on our picnic
blanket." Sunny
Bunny asked, "Do you think they have anything to do with our missing food?"
"Feathers? I remember hearing birds just before I fell asleep," said Raggedy
Ann. "So did
I," Jenny and the others agreed. The Camel
with the Wrinkled Knees said, "Look, here come two birds with red feathers
flying our way now." Jenny
said, "Quick, everyone, duck behind this tree." To their surprise, the birds
swooped down and flew off with two more cookies as they watched. "Bring
back our food, you foodnappers!" shouted Raggedy Andy. He and Raggedy Dog
chased after the birds. Jenny, Raggedy Ann,
Raggedy Cat, Sunny Bunny, Grouchy Bear and Camel ran right after them. Raggedy
Andy and Raggedy Dog were very close to the birds when
Jenny and Raggedy Ann called out, "Wait!" They all stopped running. Jenny
spoke softly, "It's just a mommy and daddy bird feeding their little ones."
Raggedy Ann asked, "Can we share our picnic with them?" "Humph,"
said Grouchy Bear, "I suppose so." "Good
idea," the others agreed. They helped Jenny
bring the blanket and the rest of the picnic food over to the tree so they could
watch the birds. Jenny
grinned, "This has been a delightful day! It sure is fun sharing a picnic with
friends." Early the
next morning, the warm sunshine peeking gently through the window woke
Jenny. "Wake up, Raggedy Ann and Andy! Wake
up, Sunny Bunny, Raggedy Cat, Raggedy Dog. Wake up, Grouchy Bear and Camel.
It's time to get ready for OUR PICNIC ADVENTURE!" Sunny
Bunny thought, "Oh, goody! I was hoping someone would say that soon." Jenny
hugged them all and said, "It's such a beautiful day. We're going to have the
best time with Sarah and Sammy. But first,
let me tell you about the wonderful dream I had last night. You won't believe
it!" Raggedy Ann and Andy just smiled at
Emily Jones. Emily
