March  2006

One night, Trina Anderson was having trouble falling asleep.  She tried lying on her back … then on her front … then on her side, but she was not able to sleep.

In her mind, Trina even tried to count dinosaurs to make herself sleepy.  She began to hope that someone would hear her restlessness and offer some help.

Just then, her bedroom door opened a little, and Trina heard the voice of Grandpa: “Sounds as if you’re having trouble sleeping, Trina.”

“Yes, Grandpa and Grandma, I sure am,” said Trina. Hopefully, she continued, “Would you please tell me a story? … a story about dinosaurs?”

In answer, Grandpa smiled and walked to the side of her bed.

“All right … now, Trina, close your eyes and imagine with me,” said Grandpa: “Once upon a time, a little girl named Trina went on a picnic with Grandpa and Grandma…”

While they were preparing the picnic lunch, Trina spotted a bunny at the edge of the woods.

Trying to get a better look at the bunny, Trina moved closer. But when the little rabbit saw Trina, the rabbit dashed into the woods.

Being curious, Trina followed. Moving from behind one tree to another, Trina tried to sneak closer. Then she saw the bunny hop into a cave.

Trina continued her search for the tricky little rabbit, and followed it into the dark cave.  There, unable to see anything, Trina said, “Where are you bunny? … Please … make a noise so I can find you.”

Hearing a strange sound, Trina went further into the blackness of the cave.

All of a sudden, it was as if the floor of the cave opened, and Trina found herself sliding down something, following the equally surprised bunny.

As they came to a stop on what she thought was a hill, Trina and the bunny looked at one another.  Then they looked around at where they were.  They were in the middle of a swamp!

“Wow!” said Trina … “We’re certainly not in Monticello, IN anymore! Where are we?”

Suddenly, Trina and the little rabbit felt the hill move! As they stared to the side, a huge head appeared.

No, not a hill for sure! They were on the back of an animal! They had slid down its long neck.

To their surprise, the gigantic creature spoke, “I am Apatosaurus. You are in Story-o-saurus Land now. In your world, I am as long as two school buses and weigh as much as five elephants!”

Trina interrupted the story: “I remember hearing about Apatosaurus.  She’s a plant-eater. She stays in the water most of the time, because that makes it easier for her to move.”

“That’s right, Trina, “Grandpa said … “ But, let’s get back to our story.”

The Apatosaurus told Trina and her bunny companion to climb down her tail. “You will be able to jump off onto dry land,” said the gentle giant.

As soon as they climbed onto land, the bunny ran after something it had seen.  Trina followed and found the bunny next to a strange little animal.  Unlike Apatosaurus, this tiny dinosaur was actually only about the size of a chicken!

Once more, the rabbit hopped away and Trina followed. This time, Trina found the curious bunny looking down at something.

It was a dinosaur nest, filled with eggs . . . eggs the size of basketballs! As they stood there, they heard angry snorting noises to their side.

The sounds came from one of the ‘horned face’ dinosaurs … Triceratops. It seemed as if Triceratops was afraid that Trina might hurt the eggs which contained Triceratops’ babies.

Sensing danger, the bunny and Trina began to run.

Trina saw a bridge ahead. She thought they could cross it to safety. But as they ran onto it, Trina saw ther was not a bridge, but was the back of a Stegosaurus! And the sides were really bony plates on the dinosaur’s back.

Again, Trina interrupted the story: “I remember you telling me about those plates … how they helped keep Stegosaurus warm when it was cold outside, and cool when it was hot outside.”

Being plant-eaters, Triceratops and Stegosaurus were no longer concerned with them. But now the swamp trembled with a new sound.

It was the roar of the most feared dinosaur – Tyrannosaurus! Trina knew that this monster was now hunting for him and the bunny.

The fearsome, meat-eating Tyrannosaurus rushed towards them! How were they to escape?

Just then, Trina and the rabbit heard the voice of Grandpa above, from the hole in the cave floor: “Here, Trina! We are here!”

Turning to the voice, Trina felt something grab her shirt. Quickly, she and the bunny left the ground. Pteranodon, the flying reptile, lifted them out of reach of Tyrannosaurus!

Pteranodon carried Trina and the rabbit toward the voices of Grandpa and Grandma. There was also another sound … the voice again of Apatosaurus: “Bring them to me, Pteranodon! Place them on my head!”

Pteranodon placed Trina and the bunny on the huge head of Apatosaurus.  And, with a smooth sure movement, Apatosaurus lifted them to the waiting arms of Grandpa and Grandma.

They had escaped from Story-o-saurus Land!

“To tell the truth, Grandpa, and Grandma I’m glad to be home. All that adventure made me tired.” And it seemed that almost as soon as those words left her lips, Trina fell fast asleep … safe at home … resting peacefully after her journey to Story-o-saurus Land.
