Cats became very important to local populations. Farmers encouraged cats to stay around their houses and farms by leaving milk soaked bread, fish-heads and other scraps of food to attract them. By helping farmers, by ridding farms of rats and other vermin, they received food and affection from their new human friends.
Cats also enjoyed a unique relationship with Egyptians and were allowed to roam freely; coming and going as they pleased.
The Egyptians created laws to protect cats, since they were held in such high regard. A religious order worshipping cats was created and lasted over 2000 years! The order included the cat goddess Bastet. She had the body of a woman and the head of a cat.
The word for cat in ancient Egypt is"mau," which sounds similar to our present day "meow."
